Foster Program

Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines the word "FOSTER" as "affording, receiving, or sharing nature or parental care though not related by blood or legal ties". The definition highlights some of the most rewarding aspects of fostering kittens and puppies. Not only do fosters nurture and care for their charges but they also share the experience with them and receive lots of nature and care from them.

The Palmetto Animal League foster program was initiated in 2002 to aid the county shelter in caring for kittens and puppies that are too young to be adopted. We also foster adult cats and dogs that are pregnant or lactating. We need your help in giving these animals a second chance at life.

So why would anyone want to volunteer to be a foster parent for an animal they don’t even own? Why would anyone want to give up their spare bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, etc. to take on the responsibility for a pet they will eventually place in someone else’s home?

People who choose to foster do so because they know they are making a difference in the lives of these abandoned and unwanted animals. A few months of inconvenience quickly turns into a rewarding, educational and fun experience. Many foster families use it as a way to teach their children about compassion and responsibility and to experience the joy of kittens and puppies without adding to the pet population. It is also ideal for retirees who travel a lot or the military who get transferred and don’t want a full time pet. If you love animals and have the space in your home and heart to temporarily foster an animal, you will find it an immeasurably rewarding experience.

We provide the support, veterinary care and supplies. If you would like to learn more about the program please contact us. We desperately need your help!

Our foster care program began in 2002 as the result of a coalition between the Palmetto Anmal League and Beaufort County Animal Shelter and Control. The PAL receives calls from the shelter to foster certain animals which it cannot adopt at the time such as:

  • Kittens and puppies less than 6 weeks old
  • Lactating Cats and Dogs
  • Pregnant Cats and Dogs

By giving these particular animals a little extra time and care, there is a greater chance of not being put down and ultimately the likelihood of being adopted increases substantially.
